Patrick Reilly - BB1 Goals
San Diego, CA

Great work ethic and always looking to do the right thing in all facets of my life whether personal or professional. I've
been working since I was 11 where I had 3 paper routes by the time I was 13. When I was 15 I made a committment that when
I was 16 I would start working multiple jobs, cashier at the supermarket and delivering the NY Times in the morning, all this
while going to high school, so I can save my money for my favorite car at the time. A year later I went out and got it. Keep
in mind this was 1988 :) It was a black Monte Carlo SS. At that time this was my greatest achievement. I worked so hard and
remember being exhausted. It didn't matter. I wanted that car the day I turned 17. Looking back it seems that it was more
important for me not to quit and do the best I can because I knew there was a deadline. A year later, I walked in the gym
for the first time. I was so nervous and had no idea what I was doing. I was with a couple of friends, namely my good friend
Alex, who had some experience lifting weights before. I remember asking him what to do. You're all going to love this. He
said, "Do 4 sets of 4 exercises for each body part 2x per week." How stupid were we! We were kids. We didn't know any better.
Needless to say I hated working out! This went on for about 2 years. Where I would start and stop after a little while. Then
I remember back in 1991-1992 I said that's it I've had enough. I made a committment to myself to follow through for 1 year
no matter what. I started reading everything. I would get Muscle & Fitness every month and several other magazines and
books to learn more. In 1994 I knew some guy in town who played semi-pro football. I felt I had something to prove so I wanted
to play football. I asked Jonny when tryouts were and he said the following spring. So I trained hard for almost a year and
walked up to the coach during training camp and he said, Let's see what you got." That was the summer of 1995. I made the
team and played defensive back that year. When I first told my friends and my ex girlfriend at the time, about trying out,
they all laughed at me. Nobody believed I could do it except me. Needless to say I did it. The following year I made a commitment
to look great that summer. That was the summer I was able to say i've mastered my body. That was 1996. Several times before
I tried to get "ripped" and fell flat on my face. That was when I figured out the carb depleting/reloading thing. At that
time I was bartending and I would always have my MET RX shake and eating my "supportive" foods. People would always ask me
"what to do" and I would help them out with some tips or suggestions. During that time someone said to me, "You know, you
should be trainer. You'd be really good." At the time I shrugged it off because I was so focused on my goal of opening my
own restaurant and not thinking of other possibilities (my RAS was working :). When I realized that when I open my restaurant
there would be no working out for awhile! That was unacceptable because I enjoyed it too much. I also enjoyed helping people
and getting attention. So I took the test through ISSA and passed. During May of 2000 I came out to San Diego with a friend
of mine for a few days and he suggested I move out here. I told him he was crazy. I thought of the possibility and it intrigued
me. What a great challenge. Move to someplace by yourself, with a new career change and not knowing a soul. Cool. February
26, 2001 I moved out here to San Diego from Fort Lee, NJ. I know it's more than 250 words. Sorry. Now you know my past...well
sort of! I'm very ambitious!
Primary Goals
Conducting 2 corporate seminars in NJ and 2 in San Diego by January 30. This will enable me to expand my outreach to help
people and will give me the opportunity to see family and friends. This will also help show me that i'm progressing to another
level in my career.
Having a set schedule where my training time is full so I can go out and enjoy the evenings with friends where I don't
have the feeling of "needing to do something productive." Where i'm at peace with myself at that moment. My mind is ALWAYS
running I often feel guilty when I go out.
Here's What Patrick Feels He Can Contribute to the Members of the Group
Some of my experience and knowledge. My ability to persevere through tough situations. My ambition for sure.
Here's What Patrick Would Most Like the Members of the Group to Do to Help Him
There experience and knowledge. Also, since as an independant trainer I don't feel like i'm doing this alone. I feel like
i'm with a "team." One of my problems is my ability to take on too many things at once. I get too excited with other projects
or ideas that I tend to "jump" around and this leaves me with getting nothing done. I work hard but I don't work smart! My
ambitions just take over!
The Patrick Evolution (evidence that betterment is already in motion)
When I first started I tryed to motivate my clients with just my passion. Just talking. it worked...temporarily. Then I
learned from Phil that people are more influenced by their words than mine. I wasn't tapping into their inner "pain." I've
since developed a "strategy" that helps me find out what goes on in my clients heads and use it against them to help empower
them between our sessions. One of the biggest things i've learned is how to communicate with my clients. When I first started
I wasn't even thinking about how their past history would affect their future outcomes. My life changed October 25, 2002 at
the Personal Training Business Forum in Manhattan Beach. That's where I met Phil. That's when I realized that this is what
I was born to do.
